Summary

Jacques Lipetz was born in Antwerp, Belgium, 1932. He was educated at Takhemoni, a Jewish school. He relates many childhood memories. He vividly describes his family’s flight through France to Marseille in May 1940. Jacques, his mother and two brothers went to Lisbon via Spain, his father via Morocco. An interesting vignette explains how he managed to join his family.

Jacques and his family sailed to New York City in 1941 but could not stay because their quota number had not come up yet. They booked passage to the Philippines and landed in Manila in May or June 1941. He describes their life as Belgian subjects under Japanese occupation. Jacques attended a private school run by the Christian Brothers, and describes his religious education as a Sephardic Jew in a congregation dominated by Ashkenazic German Jews, as well as antisemitic persecution by Filipino students. He gives an interesting account of Japanese cultural attitudes and their treatment of foreigners and natives. The Japanese brought civilian Jewish internees to High Holiday services. He tells a charming story of how a Japanese officer helped his brother get his scooter back from a German Nazi family. Jacques describes conditions in Manila towards the end of the war and liberation by Americans. Jewish chaplains held a Passover Seder for the Jewish community at the Manila racetrack. The Lipetz family left Manila for America in late 1945 and received a permanent visa five years later.

Oral History Interview with Jerry Jacobs
Jerry Jacobs born April 25, 1929 in Lodz, Poland was the youngest son in a wealthy Jewish family. Their father was an accountant, a prosperous property owner and Associate Conductor of the Lodz Symphony Orchestra. One brother was an accomplished violinist, another studied piano and Jerry hoped to join the family "Kinder Orchestra." He discusses the drastic changes that took place in 1939 with the German occupation: closing of schools, having to stay inside for safety and dangers for Jews on the streets. He describes his family’s deportation from the suburbs to Baluty (the poor section) in the Lodz Ghetto. He details inhumane conditions experienced in cattle cars to Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Rehmsdorf, after a death march in the snow in 1944. In January 1945 he escaped, and with his knowledge of German poses as an Ostdeutscher (Volksdeutsche) and briefly as a scout for the U.S. Army. After reuniting with his brothers in Lodz, they immigrated to the United States in 1947. He became a successful realtor in New York City, where he devoted himself to organizing the Interfaith Committee of Remembrance to produce annual Holocaust Memorial concerts, attended by thousands at the Cathedral of St. John the Devine.

Oral History Interview with Anna Berenholz
This is an auxiliary interview to the 1987 interview with Anna Berenholz, nee Bohorochaner, about her experiences living in Budapest, Hungary during WWII. She feels she owes her life to Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. In November/December 1944 she was put on a death march. At the time Anna was 19 years old. She was pulled out of the march along with other young Jews by orders of Raoul Wallenberg. Working as a translator for the Russians, Anna survived in Budapest until the Soviets freed the city on January 20, 1945. Once in America after the war she worked hard to find Wallenberg and thank him. She went to the Swiss, Spanish and Swedish embassies and she wrote to President Carter, and Pennsylvania Senators Heinz and Specter to try and find him, but to no avail.

Letter from Eli to Elie regarding Holocaust research and the Warsaw Ghetto uprising
This letter, dated February 11, 1983, from the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, is addressed to Elie from Eli. The author first discusses an issue with an inaudible tape related to a speech on the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and suggests that Meed deliver the speech at an upcoming 'Gathering.' The letter then requests Elie's immediate response on two critical matters. Firstly, it proposes a study of the Oranienburg and Sachsenhausen concentration camps, focusing on the "reductive process of dehumanization" that began between 1933 and 1939. Secondly, it highlights the overwhelming volume of materials pertaining to the Ghetto uprising and the urgent need to decide on a research direction, specifically mentioning newspapers, letters, and diaries. Finally, Eli informs Elie about the inclusion of an excerpt from "And The World was Silent" in a booklet for "Remembrance Days," expressing hope for its timely publication.

Letter from Elie Wiesel regarding a Conference on Antisemitism in Berlin
This is a handwritten letter from Elie Wiesel on Boston University letterhead, dated April 30, 2004. Addressed to "Mr. Secretary and my good friend," Wiesel expresses gratitude for the opportunity to join a trip to Berlin to address a conference on Antisemitism. He also conveys appreciation to the staff for their assistance and mentions enjoying meeting Craig Kelly and Carrie, among others. The letter concludes with a hope to meet again soon.

Oral History Interview with Philip Bonner
Mr. Bonner of the 159th Engineer Batallion, 3rd and 9th Army, saw combat in Normandy, Brittany, the Battle of the Bulge, and Germany. He mentions atrocities committed by Germans against French resistance fighters. He arrived in Buchenwald on April 17, 1945, several hours after its liberation. He describes conditions at Buchenwald, piles of bodies, evidence of mass cremations, semi-starved condition of survivors, their reaction to the liberators, as well as harmful effect of giving survivors their rations. He relates the rest of his war experiences, including encounters with German soldiers and civilians. Post-war, his unit built a camp in Antwerp, Belgium housing German prisoners of war. He expresses his thoughts about the causes of Hitler’s rise to power, and Germany’s role in World War II and the Holocaust. He hopes that his testimony will prevent future Holocausts.

Oral History Interview with Stephanie Clearfield
Stephanie Clearfield, nee Orenbuch, was born in Lodz, Poland December 25, 1930. She talks briefly about her life before 1939 and in the Lodz Ghetto. She learned to hide whenever there was a search, but her mother was taken away by the Germans in 1942. Many of her relatives in the ghetto starved to death. In 1944 she was transported to Auschwitz by cattle car with her father, brother and sister under horrible conditions. Upon arrival in Auschwitz, she was separated from them and put to work in a factory making carpets. She describes conditions in Auschwitz and living in constant fear. Even though Stephanie knew she would never see her family again, she wanted to survive and explains how she managed to do this. She was part of a death march from Auschwitz to Bergen - Belsen in deep snow without shoes. Stephanie and other prisoners were liberated by the British Army in April 1945. The British medical staff cared for the survivors, took some to hospitals, and provided food. She describes how the conditions in Bergen-Belsen affected the soldiers. Stephanie was sent to Feldafing, a displaced persons camp. She found an uncle in America she had never heard of through HIAS. She sailed to New York on the Marine Perch with a group of children on February 1947. They lived in a house run by HIAS. Members of Stephanie’s new found family visited her and invited her to live with them in Philadelphia. She stayed with them until she got married.
