Oral History Interview with L. I. Anonymous

Erica Van Adelsberg, nee Herz, was born in Munich in 1928 to an assimilated, liberal Jewish family. She left Germany with her parents and younger brother in 1932 to live in Aerdenhoudt, Holland, near Haarlem. They lived comfortably and Erica recalls the decency of the Dutch people. In 1940, after the German occupation, her family was designated as being stateless; they were forced to move and conditions worsened. They were sent to Westerbork internment camp in 1942. Erica continued her education and was trained as a laboratory technician at age 14. She became part of a Zionist youth group, which heightened her Jewish identity, in contrast to her parents assimilated orientation. She describes life in the camp, including her friend’s wedding as well as the weekly transports to Auschwitz. On February 15, 1944 her family, including grandparents who had joined them, was sent to Bergen-Belsen. She describes the camp routine, her work in a plastic pipe factory and the cruelty of the Polish Kapos. She was sick with para-typhoid for several weeks, with no medication. In April, 1945 the family was transported by train, with about 600 others, all of whom assumed they were going to Auschwitz. After two harrowing weeks, including bombings by Allied planes, the train was liberated by two Russian soldiers on horseback in Trebitz, near Leipzig, in Saxony. The Russians set up a hospital and cared for the survivors, many of whom succumbed to typhoid fever. Six weeks later, Americans took her family back to Holland, where her brother became the first to celebrate a Bar Mitzvah after the war. Erica came to the United States in 1946 and was the first European student admitted to a Quaker school after World War II. Herbert Broh was born in Berlin, Germany in 1930. He shares his childhood memories of his life in Germany and his family’s journey to Shanghai. Herbert relates several experiences of abusive antisemitism by his friends and his teacher, as well as his impressions of Kristallnacht. His family left Germany for Shanghai in April of 1939 to join family members already living on Seward Road in the Hongkew section of Shanghai, under Japanese occupation. Herbert was enrolled in the Kadoorie School and later a cheder. He talks about his Jewish education at the cheder and the Yeshiva Katana in great detail, as well as the effect of his growing orthodoxy on his life and his family. He describes his family’s living conditions and life in Shanghai and states he was very happy there. He was only dimly aware that other refugees had a more difficult existence. His father worked for a Chinese factory managed by Japanese; his mother worked as a cook at the Komor Kindergarten. After Pearl Harbor, his family was evacuated to the Kadoorie School. He mentions interaction between Japanese and refugees. He vividly describes the events during and after the Japanese capitulation and the arrival of Chinese Nationalist and later American troops. He witnessed the departure of the entire Mirrer Yeshiva to Canada in 1946. Herbert and his family went to the United States in 1947. This recording captures a 1961 lecture by historian and editor Solomon Grayzel at Adath Israel Congregation in Trenton, New Jersey. In the surviving portion of the talk, Grayzel uses contemporary Jewish literature—especially works by Philip Roth and Leon Uris—to reflect on the condition of modern Jewish life, the challenges of Jewish identity, and the tensions surrounding Zionism, power, and tradition. Grayzel argues that uncomfortable literary portrayals of Jewish life should not simply be dismissed, but read as revealing deeper communal concerns, particularly the growing distance of younger Jews from Jewish values and practice. He suggests that the future of Jewish life depends on renewed engagement with foundational Jewish texts and stronger transmission of tradition to the next generation

Charlotte Sonnenberg, nee Lichtendorf, was born in Bad Neuenahr, Germany January 22, 1910 into a middle class family. The Nazi boycott in 1932 and the Nurenberg Laws affected her life and her family adversely. Charlotte met and married her husband Doctor Herbert Alexander in Leipzig. On November 10, 1938 (Kristallnacht) Charlotte and her husband were driven out of their apartment and her husband was sent to Buchenwald. He was released because Charlotte obtained tickets to go to Shanghai. They sailed to Shanghai on the SS Conte Biancamano in March 1939. On arrival in Shanghai they were taken to a camp in Hongkew. They found work at the American Presbyterian Mission in Tenghsien in a hospital run by the mission. Charlotte describes in great detail their pleasant life in the mission, their relationship with other Jews and the patients. On December 7, 1941 the Japanese took over the hospital. All the missionaries were either deported or sent to concentration camps. Her husband was put in charge of the hospital. Civilians were trapped once the war ended, the Japanese left, and fighting erupted between the Chinese National Army and the Communists. Charlotte relates many riveting details about their escape to Hsuchowfu and the death of her husband. She continued alone to Tsingtao and worked as a teacher at an American Catholic Middle School. She left China in 1947 – on a troop transport – to Philadelphia. Later she met and married her husband Henry Sonnenberg there. She talks about her impression of and life in the United States as well as her love of China.

Lillian Steinig, née Edelstein, was born January 23, 1923 in Stryj, Poland. Her father was a merchant and farmer until the Russian occupation in 1939. Forced to give up his large farm to the Soviet authority, he moved his family to the city and worked in a lumber yard. Lillian and her younger brother had to attend a strict Russian school until 1941, when the Germans occupied Stryj and relocated Jews. She describes Jewish attempts to hide and the 1942 round-up of Jews, including her father and brother, who jumped from a moving cattle car and returned home. She relates in detail aid by non-Jewish Poles who gave her false identification papers and hid her brother and parents. Another Polish family in Przedborz, near Kielce, sheltered her until 1945. She describes her trip through the Russian zone at the war’s end for a reunion with her family, who moved briefly to Krakow. Antisemitic outbreaks in Krakow forced them to flee to a Displaced Persons camp in Austria in 1946. Later, in Linz, Lillian and her brother worked in Simon Wiesenthal’s Jewish Identification Center. The family emigrated to the United States in January, 1949, aboard the SS Marina, joining relatives in Philadelphia.
