Summary

Mr. Donsky served in the 101st Airborne in Germany during World War II. His unit entered a concentration camp in Germany (he does not remember which one) near the end of April 1945. He thought the prisoners might have been Hindus and also Jews. He describes the pitiful conditions of the survivors, some of whom tried to turn on the remaining guards. The survivors were transferred out of the camp shortly after liberation. He relates how he and the other soldiers in his unit were affected by what they saw at this camp.

Oral History Interview with Joseph Levy

Joseph Levy was born on August 22, 1911 in Eschweiler, Germany. Despite antisemitic harassment during childhood, he enjoyed his childhood in public and private Jewish schools and in a Jugendbund youth group.

On January 31, 1933, his father and older brother—warned by a friendly local Nazi leader—fled before storm troopers ransacked their butcher shop in Siegburg. Some Christian employees helped shelter the family at that time and later delivered a ransom for the father’s release from Dachau.

In 1937, Joseph obtained an American visa and joined his siblings in New York City. Their parents followed, aided by the Red Cross and a Jewish organization. They sailed in a fishing boat from Barcelona, with a brief stay in Cuba, before arriving in the United States in December 1941.

Most of this interview narrates the stories of his father in hiding and forced labor and his brother in resistance groups in France and Spain (both of whom had already died at the time of this interview).

Oral History Interview with William McCormick

William Mc Cormick was a sergeant in the 15th Reconnaissance Group, attached to Seventh Army Headquarters. He entered Dachau one day after the initial liberation and stayed for two days. He gives a very powerful description of the physical and mental condition of the survivors; bodies in boxcars and in piles on the ground, and human ashes in boxes near the crematorium. He reports that the Nazis killed 30,000 prisoners the week before liberation. He describes his reaction as well as that of others in his unit, and the lasting effect that what he saw in Dachau had on him.
