Rebecca tells her sister-in-law Maria about her trip to Washington, D.C.and the lingering effects of an accident she had. She also shares her thoughts about Nat Turner's rebellion and expresses her concern for Maria's family's safety.

Rebecca tells her friend Maria how much she is missed, inquires about members of her family and discusses the state of the literary journals The Salmagundi and The Port Folio.

Rebecca tells her sister-in-law Maria of the education and health of Maria's son Howard, who is attending school in Philadelphia, and comments on the financial crisis in the country affecting family and friends as well as the Orphan Society.
