While visiting Saratoga Springs, Rebecca tells her friend Julia about the bustling social scene, which she cannot take part in because she is mourning her two brothers. She also announces the birth of Elizabeth Blair Lee's first son and gives updates on other family members and friends.

Amidst the Cholera epidemic, Rebecca and Jacob write to their sister-in-law Maria, sending their condolences on the death of her mother and express relief at their family's safety and good health.
