Mary Boswell, Ben Gratz's warden, tells Rebecca of her life in Kentucky and relates news of family and friends. She also expresses her wish to see Rebecca again.

While visiting her sister Becky in New York, Miriam writes to her aunt Rebecca, updating her on the health of family and friends.

Writing to her brother Ben, Rebecca expresses her complicated feelings toward the pending nuptials and move of her niece, Sara, and updates him on the health and travels of family.

Frances tells her sister Rebecca of her son's lingering health issues since traveling to their cousin's house outside of Baltimore and that further travel plans are uncertain.

Rebecca continues to persuade her sister-in-law Maria to visit Philadelphia after the death of her eldest son, Benjamin. She also informs her of the marriage of Ben Etting, her nephew, to Harriet Marx Etting.
