Rebecca shares with her sister-in-law Maria her thoughts on Moses Samuel's translation of the Book of Jasher and how the Jewish community in Philadelphia plans to aid the imprisoned Syrian Jews during the Damascus affair.

Rebecca updates her brother Joseph on news of their family and friends while he is Hamburg, Germany. 

A letter dated July 26, 1985, from President Ronald Reagan to Elie Wiesel. In the letter, President Reagan expresses his gratitude to Mr. Wiesel for his message and prayers, stating his belief that God granted him a "comfortable and speedy recovery." He further conveys that both he and Nancy (Nancy Reagan) are deeply grateful for the kindness and warmth offered by Wiesel and many other friends. The letter is addressed to Mr. Elie Wiesel in his capacity as Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, located in Washington, D.C.

Rachel writes to her sister Rebecca, who is visiting Maria Fenno Hoffman in New York, about the comings and goings of family and friends in Philadelphia. She also assures her sister that she should not reproach herself regarding her friend Sam Ewing and relates that she tried to shield Rebecca from unwanted advances by one of Solomon Moses's brothers.
