Rebecca Gratz to Miriam Gratz Moses Cohen - December 22, [1863]

Rebecca expresses her joy at the prospect that Margaret's (Peggy) sister is recovering and ponders the tradition of April Fools' Day.

While her sister Sara is visiting her in South Carolina, Miriam writes to her aunt Rebecca, updating her on the travels, health, and activities of family and friends. She also criticizes the newest textbook written by Emma Mordecai.

Writing to her sister-in-law Ann, Rebecca tells her of the dresses she has commissioned on her behalf in Philadelphia. She also tells of the unexpected death of Julia Hoffman's brother, Ogden.

In response to reading a history of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Rebecca expresses her abhorrence of the persecution of Jews. She also commends her sister-in-law Maria for her leadership in the Lexington Orphan Society.

Writing from Saratoga Springs, Rebecca updates her sister-in-law on the health of her brother, Jo, and describes the weather and social scene there.
