Summary

Mr. Kilisky served with the Third Field Artillery Observation Battalion during World War II. His unit went to the town of Dachau around April 21st or 22nd, 1945 to establish an observation post. He explains how they became aware of the existence of Dachau concentration camp. He briefly describes what he found at Dachau, including not only survivors and evidence of mass killing, but evidence that German guards had been killed by the inmates. They were the first American troops to enter Dachau, but after two hours they were ordered to proceed to Munich and the medical units took over.

Mr. Kilisky, as well as the other men in his unit who were Christians, were strongly affected by Dachau. He can’t understand how Germans could commit such crimes and deny that they knew about the atrocities. Seeing Dachau has influenced his thinking to this day but did not affect his faith.
