Rebecca Gratz to Maria Fenno Hoffman - June 14, [1813]

Writing to her aunt Rebecca, Miriam continues to express deep sorrow over the death of her son, Gratz. She also tells that her husband will bring Gratz's remains back to Savannah.

Rebecca updates her brother Ben about the health and character of his sons, while they stay with her in Philadelphia. She also discusses recent deaths in their social circle and international politics. Their brother, Joseph Gratz, adds a note concerning the federal bank and buyable stock.

Rebecca writes to her sister-in-law Maria of the precarious health of her nieces Becky and Sara after giving birth and of a difficult child the Orphan Society is trying to take in.

Rebecca expresses her sorrow to her sister-in-law Maria that her dying brother Simon does not want to see her and the family. She also updates her on the health and travels of family and friends and the literature she is reading.

Rebecca tells her sister-in-law Maria about the community efforts to rebuild the Orphan Asylum after its devastating fire and updates her on the family. Hyman adds a note for Ben regarding business transactions.
