Rebecca Gratz to Maria Gist Gratz - October 09, 1831

Rebecca writes to her sister-in-law Ann, wishing her a happy new year, inquiring about the well-being of her children and step-children, and updating her on the health and whereabouts of family and friends. She also expresses her shock over the sinking of the steam ship "San Francisco."

Following Nat Turner's Rebellion and the subsequent racial violence in Virgina, Rebecca writes to her sister-in-law Maria about the immorality of murdering innocent Black people, and expresses her belief that Maria could be an advocate for them, despite being a slaveholder.

Writing to her sister-in-law Ann, Rebecca continues to express concern over her brother Ben after the death of his son Cary. She also updates her on the health and whereabouts of family and friends.

Rebecca tells her brother Ben how the family copes after the death of their two brothers, Jacob and Hyman. Their brother Jo adds a note, sharing the successful sale of some of their lands.

Rebecca writes to her sister-in-law Ann, complimenting her daughter's love of nature, updating her on the health and travels of family and friends, and discussing the currrent balls and fashions of society.
